Again student’s protest : Fee hike at Pune University.

On Monday, near campus Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU),  students protested against fees expansion. The postgraduate students mentioned that it was difficult for many students to pay the huge amount of fee since many families are still trying to recover from the impact of the pandemic and the financial condition of the students is still poor. Students further said that there were no satisfactory decision from the committee regarding the fee structure.

According to the students, the per annum fee structure of the course have increased in a huge amount. Postgraduate, PhD and hostel facility fee increased from 2000, 6000 and 1200 to 8000, 26,000 and 30,000 respectively. The students said that this was a one time payment which was submitted at the beginning of the course because of which their fight remains constant. Their protest was mainly for the rise in different components of fees structure. Although according to the source, the University declared on Sunday that the fees will be reduced.

Fee structure of another course also hiked up, that is, the skill based courses, Human Rights, cyber/ information society fees which increased from 500 to Rs 5000. A student from history department named Om Bhudade said, “The administration has almost trippled the fee structure for hostel and examination. However, the tuition fee is not being taken from the students”. Pro vice-chancellor of SPPU, Sanjeev Sonawane said that the letters from the student body against this matter was received last week. The reduction of fee will be decided as per justification, he further added.
