A devastating incident that unfolded yesterday, at least 40 passengers aboard the Coromandel Express in Odisha are believed to have lost their lives due to electrocution. The incident has sent shockwaves across the nation and has raised concerns about the safety of railway infrastructure.

 

The tragedy occurred when the Coromandel Express was passing through a remote area near Jagatsinghpur district in Odisha. According to preliminary reports, an overhead power cable had snapped and fallen onto the train, coming into contact with one of the compartments. The passengers inside were caught unaware as an electric current surged through the coach, leading to multiple fatalities.

 

Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with local authorities and railway personnel rushing to the scene. The injured were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for medical assistance. The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed as the rescue efforts continue.

 

Railway officials have expressed deep sorrow over the incident and have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. They have assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to ascertain the cause of the accident and prevent such incidents in the future.

 

The Chief Minister of Odisha, in a statement, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and also directed the concerned authorities to provide all possible support to the injured and their families. In the meantime, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, also visited Cuttak SCB hospital to meet with the victims. She also offered CBI enquiry for this tragic accident.

 

As a matter of concern, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also declared some amounts of ex-gratia – Rs 5 lakhs each for the next of kin to those killed in the accident, Rs 1 lakh to the injured and Rs 50,000 to the victims of the state. Whereas the Ramkrishna Mission Vidyamandir, Belur, has declared to provide free of cost education to all the orphans, who lost their parents in the accident.

 

The Odisha train tragedy has once again highlighted the pressing need for robust safety measures and regular maintenance of railway infrastructure. The incident serves as a reminder for authorities to prioritize the safety of passengers and take swift action to prevent such mishaps.

 

As the investigation progresses, authorities will be under pressure to address the systemic issues that led to this tragedy and implement measures to ensure the safety and well-being of railway passengers across the country.
