Teachers from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) took to the streets on Monday in protest of what they claim to be the unfair treatment of the institute’s faculty by the administration.
The protest, which was organized by the IIEST Teachers’ Association, saw hundreds of teachers march through the streets of Kolkata chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding better pay, job security, and improved working conditions.
Speaking to reporters, a representative of the association accused the IIEST administration of neglecting the welfare of its faculty and failing to implement promised reforms. The teachers also claimed that they have not received a salary hike in over a decade and that the institute has failed to fill vacant teaching positions.
“The administration has ignored our repeated requests for better pay and job security. We are tired of waiting and we demand action now,” said one of the protesting teachers.
The protest march caused traffic disruptions in several parts of Kolkata as the teachers marched from the IIEST campus to the Raj Bhavan, where they submitted a memorandum to the Governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar, requesting his intervention in the matter.
The IIEST Teachers’ Association has threatened to continue their protest if their demands are not met by the administration. However, the IIEST administration has not yet responded to the allegations made by the protesting teachers.
The protest by the IIEST teachers highlights the ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of faculty members in educational institutions across India. The issue of job security and fair pay for teachers has been a longstanding issue in the country, and this protest is another reminder of the urgent need for reforms in the education sector.
