In the early hours of Monday, police discovered a false contact centre operating out of Elliot Road next to Park Street. The highly organised call centre used to target Australians under many guises, such as by providing discounts on OTT platforms, offering tech assistance, or resolving problems with internet speed or software.
“Thirty others who had joined in the previous ten days were released while forty people—seven of them women—were jailed. Due of her pregnancy, a crucial defendant was also released, according to an officer. They were chosen because “they would be in a reasonable position to know that fraud was getting committed” if they had been employed for a while.
The two major operatives, Mohd Sakir and Sayantan Das, have been apprehended, according to Joint CP (crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty. (Dwaipayan Ghosh)
