With a total population of 1.339 billion people, India has only won seven medals in the Tokyo Olympics, 2021. At first, it has been placed at 66th on the list with Armenia, Dominican Republic having population like half of Mumbai. After having its first Tokyo gold medal by Neeraj Chopra’s excellent javelin throw and silver medal by Mirabai Chanu in women’s 49 kg weightlifting, it vaulted at 47th place between Romania, Hong Kong and Venezuela adding less than five percent of India’s population.

Indian novelist Manu Joseph said that India relatively lacks systematic support for its athletes. It never links sports with nationalism having a winning tradition. The social and economic conditions, poor health, infrastructure, even parents emphasizing academics over sports causes low participation in sports. Instead of lampooning any system, India should focus on better orientation of sports participation in the country, so that it could bring more medals in the next Olympics.
