Jammu Kashmir police detained journalist Khalid Gul from Anantnag district on Tuesday in relation to a 2017 case, as per sources. Gul was one of the many journalists whose houses were searched by J&K Police last month in relation to an internet threat against pro-government journalists, was taken into custody in Anantnag town.

He was a postgraduate journalist from Aligarh Muslim University and worked as the South Kashmir Bureau Chief of the valley’s largest circulated English newspaper, Greater Kashmir. He claimed to break his association with the agency earlier this year.

The arrest was not officially confirmed by the officials and neither was the cause of the detention made clear. One of the raided journalists said that they were questioned about the blog Kashmir Fight which carried the threat by The Resistance Front to some journalists who it called “stooges” and “traitors”. The blog claimed them to be intelligence agents who passed information about the “independence loving people”. The threat mentioned names of 21 journalists, editors, and owners associated with mainly three Srinagar-based organisations— newspapers Greater Kashmir and Rising Kashmir and media channel Asia News Networks.

Five journalists at the local newspapers had reportedly resigned following the threat.
