Earlier this month, police in Pakistan’s Punjab province detained a suspect in connection with a threat to launch a terror attack against the Australian cricket team during their tour of Lahore. The Australian cricket team completed its tour of Pakistan earlier this month, during which it competed in three Tests, as many One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and one Twenty20 match. According to Pakistani intelligence agencies, the team was targeted in Lahore following a threat call to the Australian interior ministry stating that they would be attacked.

“On Thursday, we located the individual who made the terror attack threat to the Australian interior ministry and detained him”

Police officer concerned Mubashir Maken told reporters. He claimed the suspect, Irfan Naseer, was apprehended in Toba Tek Singh, some 200 km from Lahore. “A case has been launched against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act and Telegraph Act,” he added, adding that the police and intelligence agencies tracked the suspect using his cell phone data. The official stated that the authorities are also exploring his involvement with any outlawed outfit.

On social media, Australian spinner Ashton Agar, who was part of the test team during Pakistan’s trip, received a death threat. The threat was later discovered to have originated from a fraudulent Instagram account.
