In an interview with Pakistani news channel Geo News last Thursday, March 2, 2023, Pakistani skipper Babar Azam was seen sharing his thoughts about the coming ODI World Cup in India, in October.

Babar when asked about the team’s approach going into the tournament, commented, “…we are focused on the World Cup in India and will try to put up a good show during the tournament”. Babar’s statements have garnered appreciation and criticism alike, criticism regarding his avoidance of the Asia Cup controversy regarding India’s refusal to participate in the September event scheduled to be held in Pakistan.

Commenting on his partnership with fellow Pakistani Cricketer, Mohammmad Rizwan, Azam said that he believed that they since have a good combination at the top and will look to socre runs for the team.  However he also added, “…..but having said that it is not possible to score in every innings which is why it is important not to depend on only two players in the team.”

Changing gears and directing some attention on the newer and younger players of the squad, he added, ” However, we also have other players in the team who are eager to play a match-winning role for the team on the field.”

In the later parts of the interview, he was asked about the recent sentiment in the public surrounding his captaincy of the currently 4th ranked, Peshawar Zalmi, in Pakistan Super League Season 8.  Azam refuted criticism and remarks, questioning his captainship skills, “…criticism will continue because it is not possible that everyone will speak in your favour. I always try to stay positive since it improves my level of confidence”.

The 28 year old talked about his future performance in the league, believing in his team’s performance in the future. “It has been a good journey so far with Peshawar Zalmi. We made some mistakes which is why we weren’t able to win some of the matches. However, we will try to do better in the upcoming matches,” he said.
