Local media claimed that an explosion at a building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, resulted in at least 17 fatalities and over 100 injuries. Following the explosion, which happened at around 4:50 p.m. (local time), five firefighting units were sent to the location, according to the bdnews24 news portal and the fire service control room.

The explosion’s cause was not immediately known, but Bangladesh, where low safety regulation is widespread, sees many fatal building fires and explosions. The blast shook the fourth and fifth floors of a seven-storey building in Gulistan, a major hub for wholesale goods in the capital Dhaka, shortly before 5 pm local time (1100 GMT). The building’s ground level is home to a number of sanitary product shops, while the building next to it once housed a branch of the BRAC Bank.

According to reports, the explosion damaged a bus parked on the other side of the road in addition to shattering the bank’s glass walls. More than 150 firemen were on the scene to help with rescue efforts even though there was no fire in the building, according to a representative for the fire services. On Saturday, three persons were killed in an explosion at an oxygen facility close to the southern port city of Chittagong.
