China is now cladding a new wave of Covid-19 virus infection that can be seen more than 65 million cases per week by the end of June,2023 as predicted by the respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan in a biotech conference in Guangzhou.
Zhong’s estimation provided a sparse glimpse into the potential impact of the latest Omicron variant XBB, which has already been fueling a resurgence in cases across China since late April,2023.
According to the report of Bloomberg Research,XBB is expected to result in 40 million infections per week by the end of May before reaching a range about 65 million a month . This comes after about six months since Beijing dismantled its Covid Zero curbs in order to allow the virus to spread rapidly among the country’s 1.4 billion residents.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention already stopped to update its weekly statistics of this variant earlier this month leading to the uprisal of many questions with the true impact of Covid-19 in China.
Zhong’s estimation suggested that this latest wave of infections will be more effective compared to the previous wave that hit China last year in January, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums and causing residents to scramble for limited supplies of fever medicine.
In response to this new upcoming threat, China is rushing to boost its vaccines with new immunizations that specifically targets the XBB variant. The country’s drug regulator has already given many preventive approvals to such vaccines.“We can lead the pack internationally in developing more effective vaccines,” said Zhong.
The World Health Organization (WHO) advisory group recently recommended that the year’s COVID-19 booster shots will be updated to target one of the currently dominant XBB variants. New formulations are updated and overcasted to aim the production of antibody responses to the XBB formulating the platforms that had achieved neutralizing antibody responses against XBB lineages and could also be considered.
