IIT-M student Sachin Kumar Jain, allegedly committed suicide at his Chennai home. Although the cause of Sachin Kumar Jain’s death is unknown, his final WhatsApp message contained the words “I’m sorry, this is not good. Enough.”
The 23-year-old Jain arrived at the institute to attend classes but left in middle to return home. He then changed the status of his phone. According to the source, some of his friends who saw this, hurried to his classroom to see how he was doing. This is the 11th suspected suicide case involving an IIT-Madras student, and the third this year, as the source reported. On March 14, a third-year student at the institute committed suicide. On February 13, the body of a second-year graduate student in the department of electrical engineering was discovered in his room. According to Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, 33 students have died by suicide at IITs across the country since 2018. According to Sarkar, “the causes behind such suicides have been determined to be academic stress, family reasons, personal reasons, mental health issues, etc.”
In a statement, IIT-Madras expressed “deep pain” at learning of Jain’s death. “A student with an unusual academic and research record, it is a great loss to the research community”. The institute extends its heartfelt condolences and joins the student’s friends and family in their sadness. In this difficult time, the institute respectfully requests that everyone should respect the privacy of the student’s family.
