The executing organization Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has begun building the underground tunnel connecting the airport Metro terminal to the line as the city impatiently waits to board the New Garia-Ruby crossing shortened stretch of the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor. The 3.5 km section from City Centre II to the airport, as well as the tunneling, ought to be completed by the end of 2024.
Even though there are a few gaps along the route, a 5.4km portion of the Metro project that connects New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is set to begin operating this month. Afcons Infrastructure, the contractors, has also started constructing the D-walls or diaphragms on either side of the 800-meter underground section that runs through AAI land. The D-wall encloses the tunneling path. For the Metro corridor, which will provide the longest green corridor between the airport in the north and New Garia (Kavi Subhas terminal) in the south, this is a significant accomplishment, a senior RVNL official said.
Four train lines and a rake stabling facility are being built as part of the box for the airport Metro station by ITD Cementation. The 800m tunnel is part of Afcons’ scope, and trenching work for it started around the end of February. Afcons received the Rs 532 crore civil construction contract with a 36-month deadline in January 2021. City Centre II and the airport Metro stations will be connected by a 3.5 km segment that is primarily elevated and has two new stations at Chinar Park and VIP Road (Haldiram’s). The next six to seven months will see the construction of the D-wall. Concrete tunnels will be built simultaneously and finished by the end of the year using the cut-and-cover method and box-pushing. According to a senior Afcons official, our package should be finished by November of next year.
