Kolkata May 23 ,2023 : The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has started sending bills to commercial establishments,that occupies more than 500sqft asking them to pay for removal of waste.The new bill comes without including fee for collecting solid waste that was made mandatory for traders to pay civic body .
There are 10 lakh traders in Kolkata who pay a trade licence fee to the civic body. “According to a rough estimate, only about 35,000 of them need to pay the solid waste collection fee,” said a KMC official.The KMC solid waste management department has noticed waste especially from hotels, restaurants, private hospitals and nursing homes, and they will be asked to pay according to the volume of waste they generate. Any commercial establishment that occupies more than 500sqft, and eateries even under 500sqft, will need to pay solid waste removal charges that will enable them to obtain a trade licence or apply for renewal of trade licence . “Now that separate bills are being issued, it will be easier for traders to know how much they are being charged for solid waste collection,” a KMC official said.The fresh bills can be obtained from treasury offices of the civic body or downloaded from the KMC’s website.
