The Centre has informed that the usage of the Desi Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (NaviC system) has increased on its home soil.

This revelation was brought to light courtesy of a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha in which Jitendra Singh said that NavIC finds utilisation in national projects like public vehicle safety, power grid synchronisation, real-time train information system, fishermen safety, etc. On top of this, Other upcoming initiatives like common alert protocol-based emergency warning, time dissemination, geodetic network and unmanned aerial vehicles are in the process of adopting the NavIC system, he informed.

Singh stated that many mobile phone models in the country are already having NavIC compatibility. The Department of Space is constantly engaged with the manufacturers of mobile phones and chipsets to support them technically for adding NavIC compatibility in their devices.

The system is there for providing signals for positioning. What that implies is applications like Google Maps can use the position obtained through NavIC or other similar system and display it on a map or other user interface for easy visualisation. Hence, a mobile phone, which has NavIC compatibility, automatically uses NavIC signals when it comes to positioning on maps. Performance of the NavIC system is on a par with other positioning systems.

The current version of NavIC finds its compatibility with L5 and S bands. The current version has been able to penetrate the civilian sector. The addition of signal in the L1 band will assist in a more rapid penetration in the civilian sector. The next satellites starting from NVS-01 onwards will have an L1 band for civilian navigational use to achieve that.

It is also heartening to note that studies are under way to work out suitable configuration to expand the reach of NavIC beyond its existing coverage.
