In a major operation, the Kolkata Police have successfully dismantled a notorious fake call centre racket operating in the city. The crackdown resulted in the arrest of 12 individuals, including two women, who were involved in carrying out fraudulent activities by impersonating various professionals over the phone. The police action is a significant breakthrough in curbing the growing menace of fake call centres in the region.
Acting on a tip-off, a specialized team from the Cyber Crime Cell of the Kolkata Police launched a meticulously planned operation in collaboration with the local law enforcement agencies. The operation targeted a call centre located in a prominent commercial area of the city, suspected to be the hub of illegal telecommunication activities.
During the raid, the police seized a large number of computers, telecommunication equipment, and other electronic devices that were used to facilitate the fraudulent operations. Preliminary investigations suggest that the call centre was engaged in a range of illegal activities, including impersonation scams, lottery frauds, and telemarketing scams.
The arrested individuals, whose identities have not been disclosed, were reportedly operating as call centre agents, making deceptive calls to unsuspecting victims both within the country and abroad. They would pose as government officials, bank representatives, or customer service executives to gain the trust of their targets before attempting to extract money or personal information.
Senior officials from the Kolkata Police have commended the efforts of their team in cracking down on this organized racket. They highlighted that these fake call centres not only defrauded innocent individuals but also tarnished the city’s reputation as an emerging business hub.
