The National Health Authority has recently gathered the accumulated healthcare network of hospitals and health units of the railway across the country under the shade of Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PM JAY). A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed later this month by Dr Sridhar Krishnappa, the executive director of Health Ministry of Railways (general) with Dr. Pankaj Kumar Arora representing NHA.

Implementation of this, resulted in the railways hospitals and health units to not charge any money from the recipient for any cost related to the treatment including diagnostics, drugs and medicine, consumables, special consultation visits, food, hospital stay, as mentioned by an official declaration by Railway Board.

This will further enable financial coverage of up to ₹5 lakh in the registered public and private hospitals for the beneficiary even if exclusive of the railway family. The terms and processes laid by the NHA mentions clearly that the resultant cost of the beneficiary will be borne by the respective patient states.

A total of 91 railway hospitals spread in various zones under this scheme will be reimbursed for the cost of the treatment and at each of these places, a registration counter is going to be set up for generation of the identity card with proper IT backup. A medical coordinator and a non-medical coordinator will be appointed to facilitate the beneficiary management.
