A 24 year old mother has been reported to have killed her two years old son and then proceeded to hang herself to death after being continuously harassed for dowry by her in-laws in Telangana’s Nalgonda on Sunday, May 22, 2022.
“The incident was first brought to notice by neighbours, who had come over to check on the woman sensing something wrong in her sudden absence. Shocked by the sight they then informed the local police who after arriving on the scene proceeded to bring down the women and child who were both found to be hanging from the ceiling. However, by then they were both long dead…”, Narketpally Circle Inspector (CI) Siva Rami Reddy said.
The mother later identified as Lasya lived with her husband Naresh, a railway worker from Aurwani village in Narketpally whom she had married three years prior. After initial investigations and collecting statements from neighbours and acquaintances the police has uncovered that prior to their marriage Lasya’s family had promised her then to be groom Naresh and his family a whopping dowry of 35 Lakhs. The first 10 lakhs of which was said to have been paid prior to the wedding. Lasya’s husband Naresh, who was posted in Telangana’s Medak district, had taken a leave of absence and was staying in Hyderabad to prepare for the state civil service examinations. However he later informed his family that he was no longer interested in it and asked for the remaining dowry from his in-laws to pursue a poultry business.
“Due to the constant pressure, Lasya’s family had given him Rs 20 lakh about 20 days ago,” said the CI.
However, Naresh had continued to harass his wife and made demands for an additional Rs 10 lakh from her family since they had ‘delayed giving the entire amount at the time of the wedding’, reported The Times of India. The Police has deduced together and theorized that on Sunday, after her mother-in-law had left the house, Lasya first hung her two year old son and then proceeded to hang herself the same way.
According to the Nalgonda Superintendent of Police (SP), a case has been registered against Naresh and his family on grounds of domestic harassment, marital abuse, threatening, torture and aggravating suicide, however no culprits concerned have been arrested as of yet and the probe is still ongoing.
