Suraj Kumar Yadav, a 22 year old undertrial prisoner of Nawada sub-jail has cracked the exhaustive Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2022, conducted by The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee last month. Being in jail for the last eleven years, he made the most out of his time behind the bars and managed to crack one of the most prestigious exams conducted nationwide.

Suraj, the murder accused, said that he owes to the superintendent of Nawada jail, Abhishek Pandey, for being the pillar of his success. Suraj had his moral support and he also provided the required books and materials. He also arranged for special foods and guided him personally to clear the exam which was held on 13th of February this year. Suraj was also granted a month’s parole to attend the examination at New Delhi.

Before his arrest in charge of the murder, Suraj was studying at Kota to clear IIT exam. He returned to his home village Mosma, following the lockdown due to covid pandemic. Suraj and his elder brother Birendra Yadav got arrested in April 2021, in charge of the murder of their neighbour Sanjay Yadav. Their father Arjun Yadav was involved in a long-standing dispute with Sanjay’s father over a village drain which was learnt to be the reason of the murder. Though, the ‘Mukhiya’ of the Mosma panchayat, Renu Devi implied that Suraj had been “implicated” in the case and his family abandoned the village fearing any revenge from the rival group. Their agricultural lands remain barren.

Suraj wishes to join IIT Roorkee once he is released. Clearing one of the most prestigious examinations from jail, Suraj had set an example that education and dedication can pull people out of the worst of situations.
